Reading № 01

On clients.

The first thing we owe a client is attention. The second is honesty. The third is the work itself, done well, with their name on it and ours.

Patchwork learns your goals and gives clear, specific advice. No performance. No posturing.

Most clients we meet have been at firms where they were a number. Where they only heard from their accountant during the busy months. Where the advice was generic, the bills were a surprise, and the phone calls were short.

That is not the experience we are building. We build relationships first. The advice follows. And the advice is good, because it has context. Because we know your name, your business, and what keeps you up at night.

The four words we hire by.

Every person who works at Patchwork has to fit these four. Every decision we make gets measured against them. Read them as a promise.

Rapport.

Working with Patchwork should feel like stopping by a friend’s house for advice. Our clients feel empowered on their path toward a functional financial future, because the relationship makes the advice land.

№ 02

Pragmatic.

Life is better without conversations that make your eyes glaze over. We will never waste your time with overcomplicated concepts when the simple answer is the right one. Plain language is a form of respect.

№ 03

Candid.

Clear and constructive communication is at the heart of Patchwork. Advice without varnish. Complete clarity throughout. If we cannot help, we say so. If something is wrong, we name it.

Counterculture.

We are not the New York Yankees of public accounting. We are playing a different game. A game where people come first and everything else is a distant second. We are happy to be smaller, slower, and stranger.

How we
behave.

The values describe what we believe. The Five C’s describe how we act. They show up in performance reviews, in client meetings, in the quiet hours where no one is checking.

Courage.

Say the hard thing in plain language. Tell clients what they need to hear, not what is easy.

№ 02

Craftsmanship.

The work is craft. Accounting is not a commodity. We sweat the details that other firms skip.

Care.

People come first. We treat clients, staff, and community like they matter, because they do.

№ 04

Context.

Numbers without context are noise. We learn your business and your life before we offer advice.

№ 05

Curiosity.

We are still students of the work. We read. We test. We ask. Then we apply it on your behalf.

Reading № 04

On The Profession

Accounting is a craft.

Patchwork develops people side by side. Not filtered out by design. Not chewed up and replaced. We hire fewer people, we pay them more, and we hold them to higher standards. That is the whole model.

The pyramid does not get built on the backs of the people at the bottom. There is no pyramid. There is a workshop, and there are craftsmen in it, and the work gets better the longer they stay.

Reading № 05

On Ownership

Will never be PE-owned.

This is a legal commitment, not a marketing promise. It is written into our operating agreement. CPA firms should be owned by CPAs. Full stop.

When private capital owns the firm, the firm serves the capital. We will not sell to a roll-up. We will not flip. We will be here in ten years, doing the same work for the same kind of people.

Coming Year Two

Something bigger is coming.

A physical space in Mechanicsville. Part firm office. Part coworking. Part gathering place. Mid-century furniture sourced one piece at a time. A room you would actually want to sit in.

For clients, for makers in our network, for neighbors who need somewhere to land between meetings. The Workshop. Coming year two.
